Soto Bangkong

Soto merupakan makanan yang mudah dijumpai di mana-mana, bahkan banyak daerah di Indonesia menjadikan soto sebagai makanan khasnya. Namun, sebenarnya soto bukanlah makanan asli Indonesia melainkan makanan Cina yang bernama caudo. Hal itu dijelaskan oleh Denys Lombard dalam bukunya yang berjudul Nusa Jawa: Silang Budaya. Akibat interaksi yang terjadi dengan bangsa Cina sejak ratusan tahun lalu, caudo pun diterima dengan baik oleh masyarakat Jawa, khususnya masyarakat di wilayah Semarang. Setelah mengalami akulturasi dengan budaya Jawa, penyebutan caudo pun berubah menjadi soto. Orang Makassar menyebutnya dengan nama coto dan orang Pekalongan menyebutnya tauto.
Sebagai daerah di mana caudo atau soto pertama kali dipopulerkan, Semarang memiliki warung soto yang melegenda dan telah ada semenjak tahun 1950-an. Warung soto tersebut dikenal dengan nama Soto Bangkong. Mendengar namanya, awalnya kami iseng berpikir bahwa soto tersebut mengunakan daging bangkong (katak) sebagai campuran sotonya. Namun perkiraan kami ternyata keliru, tambahan kata bangkong di belakang soto berasal dari nama jalan tempat warung soto itu berdiri. Sebelum berubah nama menjadi Jalan Brigjen Katamso, dulunya jalan tersebut dikenal dengan nama Jalan Bangkong.
Dari luar Warung Soto Bangkong terlihat biasa saja, tidak ada sesuatu yang istimewa. Namun begitu masuk, kesan klasik dan nyaman yang dihasilkan oleh interior ruangannya kental terasa. kami pun langsung duduk di kursi kayu dan memesan soto bangkong kepada pelayan. Tanpa menunggu lama, semangkuk soto dengan tambahan aneka sate dan perkedel dalam wadah yang terpisah telah tersaji di meja. Tak ketinggalan pula irisan jeruk nipis, kecap, dan sambal sebagi pelengkap. Mangkuk soto yang digunakan untuk mewadahi soto bangkong berbeda dengan mangkuk di warung-warung lain yang lebar dan ceper. Soto bangkong disajikan dalam mangkuk yang mungil dan tinggi, menyerupai mangkuk soto kudus namun dalam ukuran yang lebih besar.
Saat suapan pertama masuk ke mulut, soto bangkong masih terasa biasa belum ada yang istimewa. Namun di suapan-suapan selanjutnya, kelezatan soto bangkong mulai terasa dan mampu membuat lidah menari. Hingga tanpa sadar semangkuk soto bangkong yang berisikan nasi, suwiran daging ayam, caisim, tomat, soun, dan taburan bawang goreng telah tandas. Sebagai teman makan soto, terdapat aneka sate seperti sate kerang, sate telur puyuh, sate ayam, hingga tempe goreng dan perkedel. Semangkuk soto bangkong yang lezat akan menjadi asupan penuh gizi di pagi hari sebelum Anda memulai aktivitas menjelajahi kawasan Semarang.
