Bangunan Bersejarah yang Menyimpan Ribuan Kisah

Pertumbuhan jaringan kereta api yang cukup pesat di Jawa menjadikan jumlah pegawai yang dipekerjakan pun bertambah sehingga memerlukan kantor baru yang lebih luas. Hal inilah yang mendasari dibangunnya Het Hoofdkantoor van de Nederlansch Indische Spoorweg Maatscappij (NIS) atau Kantor Pusat Perusahan Kereta Api Swasta NIS di ujung Bodjongweg atau yang sekarang dikenal dengan nama Jalan Pemuda. Bangunan bergaya art decoyang memiliki 2 menara kembar didepannya ini kemudian jamak disebut dengan nama Lawang Sewu.
Penyebutan Lawang Sewu oleh penduduk lokal bukan tanpa alasan. Dalam bahasa Jawa, lawang berarti pintu dan sewu berarti seribu, jadi lawang sewuberarti seribu pintu. Hal ini bukan berarti bahwa Lawang Sewu memiliki seribu pintu, melainkan untuk menggambarkan jumlah pintu di Lawang Sewu yang teramat banyak. Meski sudah berusia satu abad, gedung bergaya indis yang dipadukan dengan ornamen lokal yang kental ini masih terlihat kuat dan kokoh. Hiasan kaca patri di jendela semakin menambah kesan mewah dan elegan. Waktu rupanya tak mampu memudarkan kegagahan dan keanggunan gedung yang menjadi landmark Kota Semarang ini.
Selain arsitekturnya yang indah, Gedung Lawang Sewu juga sarat akan nilai sejarah. Pada awal pembangunannya, gedung yang terletak tepat di depan Jalan Raya Pos Daendels ini digunakan sebagai kantor pusat NIS dan tempat tinggal pegawai Belanda. Kemudian pernah digunakan sebagai penjara bawah tanah oleh serdadu Jepang, lokasi pertempuran 5 hari di Semarang, hingga kantor pemerintahan pasca Indonesia merdeka. Saat ini pengelolaan Gedung Lawang Sewu berada di bawah PT KAI.
Memasuki salah satu Gedung Lawang Sewu, YogYES disambut lorong panjang yang dipenuhi pintu kayu di kanan dan kirinya. Bangunan yang dulu juga berfungsi sebagai tempat tinggal pegawai NIS ini dilengkapi dengan ballroom, ruang makan yang luas, gedung serbaguna, hingga gedung pertunjukan berbentuk bahtera terbalik di lantai atas. Sayangnya tidak ada lagi perabotan yang tersisa di ruangan tersebut, yang ada hanyalah ruangan yang kosong dan hampa. Kunjungan ke Lawang Sewu kemudian dilanjutkan dengan menyusuri ruang bawah tanah. Menyaksikan ruangan-ruangan sempit, gelap, dan lembab yang pernah digunakan sebagai penjara berdiri dan penjara jongkok membuat bulu kuduk YogYES meremang. Aroma kekejaman yang terjadi di masa lalu terasa dengan jelas. YogYES pun mempercepat langkah meninggalkan ruangan ini.
